Tournament FAQs

I need to be linked on Tabroom, who do I contact?

Contact DVSD’s secretary for more information.

How long is the debate season?

Tournaments start around September and usually last until the end of March/April. State/national qualifiers typically occur around mid March, States and TOC occur in April, and Nationals occur in June.

Where do we find sign-ups for tournaments?

Sign ups for tournaments are posted on the Dougherty Valley Speech and Debate Facebook group. Make sure to fill out the tournament interest form (Google form) AND register for the tournament on Tabroom.

How many league tournaments am I required to compete in?

For eligibility to compete at State qualifiers, you must compete in at least one league tournament in the Varsity level of your chosen event.

Am I allowed to double-enter in events? (compete in 2 events at a tournament)

You are eligible to sign up for tournaments in two events as long as you demonstrate consistent dedication to both events. This also means ranking high in both events during competitions. Make sure one event is not being compromised over the other event - you will not be allowed to double-enter if this occurs.

Is there a judging requirement for parents?

While there is no judging requirement for parents, it is highly recommended that parents judge as much as they can as their participation is key to the club functioning effectively. Parent availability for a tournament heavily affects which students are chosen to go, and it demonstrates more of your dedication to your captions if your parents are able to judge tournaments. If your parent is judging, make sure they complete all the requirements for Be-A-Mentor clearance (found under Parents Corner).

What is the selection process for Nationals?

Nationals is only attended by competitors who qualify during our district’s National Qualifier tournament. To attend qualifiers, you have to be near the top of Varsity in your event. Depending on your event, an in-house scrimmage might take place to decide which competitors will be sent to National qualifiers. If you attend qualifiers and qualify, then you are sent to Nationals.
